Okanagan Art Show and Inspiration Symposium 2018

The 2018 OASIS Symposium and workshops will be held on Saturday, April 28th and Sunday April 29th at Okanagan College and the OASIS Art Show will be held the month of July at the Peachland Art Gallery  The Art show will be a National show open to all Active, AFCA and SFCA members of the Federation of Canadian Artists from across Canada.

The 2018 OASIS Symposium will be held on Saturday, April 28th at the Okanagan College Theatre followed by Workshops on Sunday, April 29th in the Centre for Learning Building E.  You are welcome to attend just the Symposium or to take in both days.  The workshops have limited registration and tend to fill quickly.

MapClick here for a map of the campusThere is lots of free parking on weekends.  You may park in any non-handicap marked spot in any of the parking lots.

Itinerary:  In the morning, each of the artists will give a presentation. Following the presentations the artists will participate in a panel discussion with questions from the audience. In the afternoon, each of the artists will do a demonstration in separate rooms.  Attendees are welcome to focus on one demo or to roam from room to room.

Tickets for the Symposium

 
Tickets are $30 per person.  Admission is free for students with a valid student card.

Advance ticket sales are now closed.  Tickets are available at the door.

Lunch at the Symposium 

This year, we are offering the convenience of a pre-paid, pre-ordered lunch. The cost is $10 and includes your choice of sandwich (turkey, ham, veggie or egg salad) on whole wheat, wrap or gluten free bread, fruit and a beverage. There are numerous areas around the campus to enjoy your lunch, both inside and out. Lunches must be ordered before 5 pm, April 25th.

Orders are now closed.

We will let you know at the symposium where your lunch can be picked up.

The Guest Artists:

Neil Patterson 3Neil Patterson, SFCA.

Neil was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and has always wanted to become an artist. His mother encouraged him as a young child, saying, "You can have whatever you want. If you want it enough, you'll get it."

"Painting is all about passion," declares Neil Patterson. "If you respond to the passion that you have inside yourself, that's when the real painting comes out. Selling your work is a bonus; painting itself is what really matters." It is his ability to paint feelings rather than merely replicating what he sees that makes Patterson's vibrant, impressionistic oils so appealing.   Always willing to pass on his distinctive approach to oils, he also takes great joy in teaching workshops. 

Neil Patterson selfNeil Patterson has numerous awards to his credit and has been published in many books, newspapers and magazines including The Best of Flower Painting, International Artist Magazine, Art of the West and The Artist's Magazine. His bright impressionistic scenes have found enthusiastic audiences in Canada, the United States, and most recently in China.

Dene Croft is President and senior member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

“I’ve always believed that by the time you turn professional as an artist you are a thousand influences deep . . . my great influences are Tamara De Lempicka, Edward Hopper and Gustav Klimt and with endless respect and admiration for the ground that they broke for future painters, I pay homage to them daily in my own work, while constantly pressing forward with my own sense of aesthetic and storytelling.” 

Dene Croft SelfTen years ago I reached a pivotal point in my journey as a painter, and drawing on my interest in metal leaf and gilding I abandoned my high-key palette, maintained my interest in human studies, and became more focused on the creating of ambiance and atmosphere in my work and became less concerned with the drama and theater of my former body of art-deco inspired paintings. 

My interest in the human form however, has remained – my focus on the creation of “human studies” rather than the painting of “portraits” through the use of silver leaf and a limited palette, and with the assistance of my talented models, I attempt to project an ethereal grace in my work – dream like, narrative paintings that leave the viewer writing the end of the story.” 

“Painting has become both a great passion and a blessed curse for me; I love what I do and I love to infuse my passion for my art in others and with that, my studio has become a hive of creativity in the mentoring of other artists, and marries my passion for what I do as an artist and my love of people through my teaching”.

Suzanne Northcott 4

Suzanne Northcott, SFCA

Suzanne is an interdisciplinary artist whose explorations have crossed into the worlds of poetry, video, photography, and textile. Her subject matter over thirty years of work has included the human body, crow migration, butterfly cycles and bog wetlands.

She values the freedom to study in an organic way, allowing the subject to suggest the methodology, watching to see how what is learned in one domain informs another. 

As an instructor, Northcott works to illuminate mysteries of the creative process with humour and insight and is known for her ability to help students break through to new personal ground in their work.
