Set up, composition, lighting and master technique will provide the foundation for this one-day workshop.
We will be discussing an academic approach to painting the still life - lots of demos, a little art history, a lot of discussion and demonstration of technique that I employ in the backgrounds of my paintings - grisaille, sfumato, alla prima and glazing. We will also be discussing the importance of preparation and use of tonal value underpainting and building the painting using a combination of alla prima, sfumato and glazing. We will explore the techniques used in painting reflective surfaces (silverware and glass) and working with hard and soft subjects.
