"Mount Kerkeslin" by John M Cochrane

John Cochrane

Born in Toronto  ,  John Cochrane's early years were spent in Ontario and Quebec .  He is a graduate of McGill Universtity and  SUNY Buffalo.    He practiced as a health care professional in  Edmonton and later in Prince George , B.C.  until 2011.

As a child, drawing was a regular hobby.   As career years began to wind down, his interest in drawing and  painting was rekindled.

Starting in 1995  various  talented  mentors in North Central BC were helpful in building painting skills.    He was also a regular attendee at the Jasper Watercolour workshops over a 14 year period.   Gregg Johnson , an Edmonton artist was the mentor of the group.   Regular plein air painting was part of those events.   The result was a Rocky Mountain series of landscape watercolours.

Attendance at other workshops included  the FCA  Gabriola Island  workshops with multiple mentors.

John is presently involved with Livessence and is life drawing  in dry media, and painting in watercolour and acrylic.   Painting style  is representational   and  features  figurative work,  landscapes and marinescapes.

John  has been a resident of Kelowna since 2012 and has been a  supporting FCA member for many years.    He recently became an active member of FCA-COC.   He is a supporting member of the KAG.

Artistic influences include mentors like Gregg Johnson , Robert Genn,  Liz Wiltzen,  Jean Dobie,  and Michael O'Toole. He has also been influenced by legendary artists like Winslow Homer,  J.S. Sargent,  A.J. Casson,  A.Y. Jackson,  and many others.   He has been fortunate in being able to visit many famous museums and galleries in North America and Europe.  In 2016 there was an opportunity to re-visit  the AGO and National Gallery in Ontario.   The Canadiana collection at the AGO and the McMichael collection in Kleinburg , Ontario are particular favorites.
