Jean Pederson, 2012 Juror

Judges Show Comments:

When there is a generous supply of great paintings to choose from, as is most definitely the case in this competition, it indicates that the basic considerations for intention, technique, style, and composition have been successfully handled by many artists. It also makes for a very difficult task to select just five winners.

"Windshield no. 50 (light traffic)" by James Postill

Best in Show
Classic Gallery Framing Award

"Windshield No.50 (light traffic)"
36" x 48" oil on canvas
by James Postill

Judges Comments:
This painting caught my attention at the beginning of the jury process. Everyone has experienced conditions like this one while driving. The mundane has been transformed into the intriguing. The sophisticated use of colour and subtle neutrals support the damp ambiance of the image. I am left with a myriad of questions and find myself captivated.

"Cantina" by Donna MacDonald

Second Place
Swinton's Art Supplies Award

"Cantina"
9" x 12" oil on linen panel
by Donna MacDonald

Judges Comments:
Cantina was painted with confidence, understanding and boldness. From the great brush work to repetition with variety, simple shapes, just the right balance of big and small, light and dark, hot and cold, lost and found. Cantina hits the mark.

"Perspective of Youth" by Jason Sacran

Third Place
Westshore Artist Panels Award

"Perspective of Youth"
48" x 24" oil on canvas
by Jason Sacran

Judges Comments:
Perspective of Youth puts a contemporary twist on a traditional subject and method. The young lady's posture, and expression is timeless but her contemporary clothing betray the suggestion of an earlier age. I particularly like the division of space and the risk taken in placing such emphasis and detail at the top of the composition in contrast to the simplicity of the bottom third of the painting. Again, this painting incites more questions for me then answers.

"Hierarchy" by lee caufield

Honourable Mention
Artist Websites Award

"Hierarchy"
24" x 24" mixed media
by Lee Caufield

Judges Comments:
Hierarchy incorporates a very creative approach to a common subject. I particularly enjoy the use of texture and simple shapes within the painting. The story of the birds is told with a strong personal visual language, laced with rhythm and harmony.

"Julie 1" by Francois Chartier

Honourable Mention
Artist Websites Award

"Julie"
48" x 48" oil on canvas
by Francois Chartier

Judges Comments:
Julie is crafted to perfection. The draftsmanship and painting skills required to achieve such believable photo realism is clearly evident. The painting offers more than a realistic image; there is a tension created from the posture of her body and the proximity of her head to the surface as the young lady was caught in action moving through the water just moments before the need to resurface for a breath. Julie is, as with the other top five, one of those images that demands the viewers attention.

Judges Special Notes:

These 12 paintings are worthy of special mention because they offer more than technique or composition; they resonate emotion and have that extra connection to the viewer. These paintings make you think, catch you in a smile, intrigue you and prompt you to ask questions. These sensitive works really communicate with the viewer and the dialogue for me, is memorable.
